Introduction

Kia ora,

My name is Matthew and I am a registered nurse. I have lived experience of mental distress and use peer support elements in my mahi. I always see the person i am supporting as being in charge and practice person-centred recovery.  I specialise in person-centred goals creation and Te Whare tapa Wha accomplishment. Strengths-based recovery is my focus. My special interests are around Wellness Recovery Action Plan (WRAP ) completion, sensory modulation, self-harm Autism and ADHD support, anxiety management and substance use.  My Tikanga knowledge is detailed and comes from a strong Wairua base. I have been fortunate to teach at the Kokiri centre in Dunedin and wrote and taught  the NZQA qualification Whanua Ora level 3. I educate around all areas of hinengaro / mental distress. I have suitable presentations and education packages for support in recovery I like to work in the whenua with trips into the whenua with moana and ngahere locations explored. i am approachable and friendly. Areas of expertise include Acute, mild & moderate mental illness,  Drugs & alcohol assessment & education,  therapeutic relationship building,  anxiety,  medication knowledge,mindfulness & other coping strategies,  challenging behaviour,  Dual diagnosis,  WhanauOra appraoches,   depression & crisis management ,needs assessments and goals,   health,  Developing & delivering educational programs,  facilitating communication between organisations,  AOD brief intervention,  Te Whare Tapa Wha,  De-escalation,  Autism WRAPplans,   Peer Support Studies as part of post grad studies and has a NZQA level 3 in peer support and mental health and addiction.

Experience

I currently work for Stopping Violence Dunedin. I am a private nurse and worked in this area for 5 years. I have lived in Aotearoa for 25 years and love to include music and art into my thed for maori services for 3 years under the kokiri centre rapies. 

i have lived experience and have struggled in the past with anxiety and depression. 

I worked for 3 years for Arai te Uru Kokiri training centre.

I have great knowledge around health issues including diabetes, epilepsy and diet.
