Provider Type: Counsellor
Specialities: Equine Therapy
Introduction
I am a mother to 4 (all grown) and now live with my herd of 4 ponies. From my own life experience, I know that being outside with horses is a holistic process that supports healing and growth. Nature and animals are so vital to my well-being and I have brought my animal experience and counselling together so I can share this with people. Reconnecting with ourselves in a safe and nurturing natural environment can support awareness and integration of traumatic grief.
Qualifications
Bachelor of Counselling degree. (Person Centred Counselling).
Post Graduate Certificate in Equine Assisted Psychotherapy from The Equine and Animal Assisted Psychotherapy Institute, Australia. (Gestalt model).
Certificate in Zookeeping/Captive Wild Animal Management.
Experience
I have been working with people recovering from trauma and abuse for over 5 years. My experience is working with survivors of sexual abuse both recent and historic.
(Christchurch Women's Prison, Sexual Violence Support Worker - Aviva, Counselling (and crisis/court support) at OCASA, Otepoti Communities Against Sexual Abuse).
Before people I worked with wildlife both at Orana Park and Willowbank Wildlife Reserve zoos and also at the South Island Wildlife Hospital with native birds. I have always had horses and dogs in my life.
Understanding species specific ethology is key to enhancing the communication and relationships with the animals in our lives. This connection can support us to reconnect with our authentic self and become present and aware.
